Estimated energy consumption and cost
Energy use is calculated from appliance power, hours of daily use, days of monthly use, and your electricity rate.
How Does the Electricity Cost Calculator Work?
The Electricity Cost Calculator estimates how much electricity an appliance uses and how much it costs to operate.
The calculation is based on four simple pieces of information:
- Appliance power: The power rating of the appliance in watts (W).
- Hours used per day: How long the appliance operates each day.
- Days used per month: The number of days the appliance is used each month.
- Electricity rate: The price you pay for electricity, measured in dollars per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The calculator converts the appliance's power from watts to kilowatt-hours and then multiplies the energy used by your electricity rate to estimate the cost.
Example: How Much Does a 1,500-Watt Appliance Cost to Run?
For example, let's say you have a 1,500-watt appliance that you use for 4 hours per day. Your electricity rate is $0.16 per kWh, and you use the appliance 30 days per month.
With these numbers, the estimated electricity consumption is:
- 6 kWh per day
- 180 kWh per month
- 2,160 kWh per year
The estimated cost would be:
- $0.96 per day
- $28.80 per month
- $345.60 per year
This example shows how even a single high-power appliance can add a noticeable amount to your electricity bill when it is used regularly.
