How Does the EV Charging Cost Calculator Work?

The EV Charging Cost Calculator estimates how much electricity is needed to charge an electric vehicle and how much that charging session will cost.

The calculation uses four main inputs:

  • EV battery size: The usable battery capacity of the vehicle, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh).
  • Battery charged: The percentage of the battery you want to add during the charging session.
  • Electricity rate: The price you pay for electricity, measured in dollars per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
  • Charging losses: The additional electricity that may be lost during the charging process.

The calculator estimates the energy added to the battery, accounts for charging losses, and then multiplies the electricity drawn from the grid by your electricity rate.

Example: How Much Does It Cost to Charge a 60 kWh EV?

For example, let’s say your electric vehicle has a 60 kWh battery and you want to charge it by 80%. Your electricity rate is $0.16 per kWh, with estimated charging losses of 10%.

The calculation estimates:

  • 48.00 kWh added to the battery
  • 4.80 kWh of estimated charging losses
  • 52.80 kWh drawn from the electricity grid
  • $8.45 estimated charging cost

Actual charging costs can vary depending on the vehicle, home charger, charging efficiency, battery temperature, and electricity rate.
