How is this calculated?

The calculator estimates electricity use by multiplying the heater’s power by the number of hours it operates. Actual electricity consumption may vary depending on thermostat settings, cycling, and how the heater is used.

How Does the Space Heater Cost Calculator Work?

The Space Heater Cost Calculator estimates how much electricity a space heater uses and how much it costs to operate.

The calculation is based on four simple inputs:

  • Space heater power: The electrical power used by the heater, measured in watts (W).
  • Hours used per day: The approximate number of hours the heater operates each day.
  • Days used per month: The number of days the heater is used each month.
  • Electricity rate: The price you pay for electricity, measured in dollars per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

The calculator converts the heater’s power from watts to kilowatt-hours and then multiplies the energy consumption by your electricity rate to estimate the operating cost.

Actual electricity use can be lower than the simple calculation if the heater cycles on and off rather than operating continuously at full power.

Example: How Much Does a 1,500-Watt Space Heater Cost to Run?

For example, let’s say you have a 1,500-watt space heater that you use for 4 hours per day. Your electricity rate is $0.16 per kWh, and you use the heater 30 days per month.

With these numbers, the estimated electricity consumption is:

  • 6 kWh per day
  • 180 kWh per month
  • 2,160 kWh per year

The estimated electricity cost would be:

  • $0.96 per day
  • $28.80 per month
  • $345.60 per year

This example assumes the heater operates at its full rated power for the entire 4 hours. Actual costs may be lower if the heater cycles on and off or uses a lower power setting.
