Want to estimate how much a heat pump costs to operate? Use our free Heat Pump Cost Calculator to estimate daily, monthly, and yearly electricity costs based on the heat pump’s power, operating time, and your electricity rate.
Enter the heat pump’s power consumption, how many hours it runs each day, the number of days it operates each month, and your electricity rate. The calculator will estimate the energy it uses and the approximate cost of running it.

Estimated energy consumption and operating cost
The calculator estimates electricity use from the heat pump’s power rating, daily operating time, monthly usage, and electricity rate.
How Does the Heat Pump Cost Calculator Work?
The Heat Pump Cost Calculator estimates how much electricity a heat pump uses and how much it costs to operate based on its electrical power consumption and usage time.
The calculation uses four simple pieces of information:
- Heat pump power: The electrical power used by the heat pump, measured in watts (W).
- Hours used per day: The approximate number of hours the heat pump operates each day.
- Days used per month: The number of days the heat pump is used each month.
- Electricity rate: The price you pay for electricity, measured in dollars per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
The calculator converts the heat pump's power from watts to kilowatt-hours and then uses your electricity rate to estimate the operating cost.
Example: How Much Does a 3,000-Watt Heat Pump Cost to Run?
For example, let's say a heat pump uses 3,000 watts of electrical power and operates for 8 hours per day. Your electricity rate is $0.16 per kWh, and the heat pump operates 30 days per month.
With these numbers, the estimated electricity consumption is:
- 24 kWh per day
- 720 kWh per month
- 8,640 kWh per year
The estimated electricity cost would be:
- $3.84 per day
- $115.20 per month
- $1,382.40 per year
This is an estimate based on the electrical power input and the amount of time the heat pump operates. Actual heat pump electricity consumption can vary depending on the model, efficiency, outdoor temperature, thermostat settings, and heating or cooling demand.
